The Islamic Republic News Agency reported today, Thursday, that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian met with Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq Ali for the first time since the diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed seven years ago. The agency stated that the meeting, held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku, aimed to address misunderstandings between the two countries and to enhance political and economic relations between Tehran and Khartoum.
Abdollahian tweeted: "On the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement meeting, our delegation met with the Sudanese Foreign Minister and discussed ways to promptly resume diplomatic relations between Khartoum and Tehran."
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry reported in a statement that the meeting, which took place during the Non-Aligned Movement meeting in Baku, discussed the swift restoration of relations. Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq thanked Iran for providing humanitarian assistance through the Iranian Red Crescent during the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
