France coach Didier Deschamps revealed on Thursday that Kylian Mbappe cannot be satisfied with his recent performance, following the announcement of his squad for the upcoming match against the Netherlands in the European Championship qualifiers and a friendly against Scotland.
Mbappe has struggled this season despite scoring seven goals in Ligue 1 for Paris Saint-Germain. PSG lost 4-1 to Newcastle United in the Champions League on Wednesday, and Mbappe had little impact in the game at St. James' Park.
Deschamps said in a press conference, "He's not at his best, just like his club's results. Clearly, despite all his real potential, this decline affects the team. This is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that he goes through periods where his performance drops. Perhaps he didn't have strong preparations during the summer."
Deschamps believes in Mbappe's ability to regain his form. He stated, "But I’m not worried about him or his competitive spirit. I know him well. He should not be satisfied at the moment. Even when he performs well, he wants to do better."
France will travel to Amsterdam to face the Netherlands on October 13. France tops Group B with a perfect score of 15 points. The French national team will host Scotland in Lille on October 17.
