International artist Shakira and the Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office have reached an agreement that ends the singer's trial for tax evasion shortly after the first hearings began in Barcelona, in exchange for her admitting her guilt and paying a fine amounting to millions of euros, as announced by the court president on Monday.
Under this agreement, the Colombian singer is sentenced to three years in prison, which is suspended and reduced to a fine, with the financial penalty amounting to 50% of the tax fraud value, according to what the court president stated at the beginning of the session in front of the singer, who indicated that she had admitted her guilt and accepted the penalties imposed on her.
Shakira is accused of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of a total of 14.5 million euros (15.8 million dollars) for the period between 2012 and 2014.
