US Urges Allies Not to Provide Chip-Making Tools to China

A US Department of Commerce official indicated today, Wednesday, that "the Biden administration is asking allies to prevent local companies from supplying certain chip-making tools to Chinese customers." Alan Estevez, the official in charge of export controls, told reporters at an annual conference: "We are working with our allies to determine what is critical to provide and what is not... We are pushing to ensure these key components are not provided, and these are the discussions we are having with our allies." Washington has been engaged in a long-standing technological war with Beijing, seeking to prevent China from manufacturing more advanced chips that could be used to bolster its military.
