With Israel resuming its attacks on the Gaza Strip following the collapse of a temporary truce that lasted for a week, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, characterized the situation in the densely populated Palestinian enclave as terrifying.
In a tweet on his X account on Sunday, he stated that reports coming in about ongoing hostilities and heavy bombardment in Gaza are petrifying, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
He mentioned that a team from the organization visited Nassar Medical Hospital in the south, which was packed with 1,000 patients—three times over its capacity. Countless people were seeking shelter, filling every corner of the facility.
Tedros described the conditions at Nassar Medical Complex, the largest in the southern Gaza Strip, as "entirely unsuitable for providing healthcare," adding that there are innumerable people seeking refuge, filling every corner, while patients are receiving care on the floor and crying out in pain.
Furthermore, he emphasized that "there are no words to express the extent of the organization’s concern regarding what is happening in Gaza," concluding with a call to "stop the fire now."
