The German newspaper "Bild" revealed a major surprise regarding one of the candidates to lead the German national team, following the dismissal of coach Hans Flick yesterday, after a significant 4-1 friendly loss to Japan. According to the German newspaper, the French Zinedine Zidane, former manager of Real Madrid, is among the candidates to take over the national team.
The report added that "Zidane's remarkable history, both in the clubs he played for and his coaching career with Real Madrid, along with the respect he receives due to his stature as a player, could support his selection as coach for Germany."
For his part, the president of the German Football Association, Bernd Neuendorf, stated: "We have agreed that the national team needs a new leader, after recently disappointing results... We need a spirit of optimism and confidence as Euro 2024 approaches (which will be held) in our country."
He continued: "For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions I have made during my tenure so far because I value Hans Flick and his assistants as football experts and as individuals. However, sporting success is extremely important for the German Football Association, so the decision was inevitable."
Rudi Völler, the team director, along with Hannes Wolf, the coach of the German U-20 team, and his assistant Sandro Wagner, will take charge of the friendly match against France in Dortmund tomorrow, Tuesday.
The German Football Association stated: "The goal is to find a successor to Flick as soon as possible."
