Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool's defender, wants his team to win against all competitors, but he considers the 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday a step in the right direction, given City's strength at home. Alexander-Arnold (25), a Liverpool academy graduate, ended City's consecutive winning streak at the Etihad Stadium, which had lasted 23 matches across all competitions, when he scored the equalizer in the 88th minute with his right foot. During this streak, City had previously crushed Liverpool 4-1 last April.
Currently, Liverpool, having finished fifth in the Premier League last season, is just two points behind the leader. In response to a question about improvements in Liverpool's performance, Alexander-Arnold said, "Definitely (there is progress). Many times we have performed much better against City and lost. So coming here and getting a point is a good result for us. This is what we needed as a team, and it gives us the belief that even if we don't perform well against the champions, we can at least get a point, which means you are moving in the right direction; today we gave our all and got this point."
Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp stated that his team has made progress against Pep Guardiola's side, but it is still undergoing a transition. The German coach told reporters, "I think we succeeded in a test. I don't know for sure if this is the test. Last year we had a stable team, and we got completely crushed here with no chance. Today, we had a chance. I'm not silly. If you ask me which team had a better chance of winning, it's City. That's clear."
Liverpool will face Austrian side LASK at Anfield in the Europa League next Thursday, before meeting 15th-placed Fulham in the Premier League next Sunday.
