US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Bangkok today, Friday, and tomorrow, Saturday, in light of the commitment from the leaders of both countries to deepen dialogue between the world's largest economies. The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced the meeting in a separate statement.
The meeting comes just over two months after US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met for nearly four hours on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco. Biden and Xi agreed to open a presidential hotline and resume communications between their militaries but remained in disagreement over Taiwan.
Additionally, Sullivan, who reports directly to Biden, will also meet with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Deputy Prime Minister Supattanapong Punmee. Watson stated, "In these meetings, Mr. Sullivan will reaffirm the importance of the US-Thailand treaty alliance and partnership, and will discuss opportunities to enhance cooperation on a range of bilateral and global issues."
