For the second consecutive year, Australian Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the Australian Open, the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the season, due to ongoing injuries that have kept him off the courts for an extended period in the 2023 season. Kyrgios had previously withdrawn from the Australian Open earlier this year and underwent surgery on his left ankle, losing his first match back after a five-month absence to Chinese player Wu Yibing in the first round of the Stuttgart Open.
Following that, Kyrgios (28 years old) missed the French Open due to a foot injury sustained during a car theft and withdrew from Wimbledon due to a wrist ligament issue, which also forced him to pull out of the US Open. Kyrgios stated via the OnlyFans platform he joined on Friday, "This is a very painful time for me, but I will not be able to compete in the 2024 Australian Open. This is definitely disappointing because I have many beautiful memories there, and I would like to return and perform well, but I need some additional time to recover."
He added, "I was very close to winning a Grand Slam title. I want to make sure my body gets the time it needs to return. So please be patient with me." Kyrgios's journey with injuries began after a remarkable season in 2022, during which he reached the Wimbledon final, won the Washington Open title, and reached the quarter-finals of the US Open. The 2024 Australian Open will take place at Melbourne Park from January 14 to 28.
