The Qatar Olympic Committee announced the participation of 14 athletes in the 33rd Summer Olympic Games – Paris 2024, which will be held from July 26 to August 11. The committee highlighted Qatar's participation during a press conference attended by Mr. Mohamed Issa Al-Fadhala, Director of Sports Affairs, and Mr. Mohamed Saeed Al-Masned, Manager of the Qatari delegation.
Al-Fadhala emphasized that participating in the Olympic Games is a privilege for every athlete, considering it the largest sporting event in the world. He praised the efforts of the qualifying Qatari federations and the preparation plans to equip the athletes in the best possible way, noting the significant ambitions to achieve outstanding results in this edition of the Olympics.
Mr. Al-Masned revealed the 14 athletes representing five federations: athletics, volleyball, shooting, weightlifting, and swimming. The participant list includes: Mutaz Essa Barshim, Abdulrahman Samba, Abubakar Haidar, Basel Hamida, Ismail Dawood, Ammar Ismail, Saif Mohammed, and Shahd Mohammed in athletics; Saeed Abu Sharab and Rashid Saleh Al-Athbah in shooting; Fares Ibrahim Hassan in weightlifting; Sherif Younis and Ahmed Tijan in beach volleyball; and Abdulaziz Al-Abidli in swimming.
He indicated that Mutaz Barshim and Shahd Mohammed would carry the Qatari flag at the opening ceremony. The arrival of Qatari athletes in Paris will begin on July 19, and preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics started immediately after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, wishing success for Qatar’s athletes and hoping for medals in this event.
Qatar achieved an unprecedented feat in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by winning three medals, including two gold medals for Mutaz Barshim in the high jump event and Fares Ibrahim in the weightlifting 96 kg category, along with a bronze medal for the beach volleyball team comprising Ahmed Tijan and Sherif Younis, placing Qatar first among Arab countries with these three medals.
