The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Minister Gebran Bassil, confirmed in a statement today, Monday, that "the circumstances necessitate working on a national understanding that preserves national unity and leads to the reconstitution of power by first electing a president for the republic and then forming a government." He added: "We are facing a war greater than Lebanon, and we must look for ways to protect the country from it." Bassil is expected to continue his tour tomorrow to meet with other political factions.
The statement included: "As part of the consultative tour of the political leaders in the country under the title of protecting Lebanon and national unity, the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Deputy Gebran Bassil, met in the morning with the caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati at the Grand Serail without making any statements after the meeting. Later, Bassil met in the afternoon with the former head of the Progressive Socialist Party, Deputy Walid Jumblatt, in Clemenceau, where Bassil stated after the meeting that he sensed, in his conversation with Jumblatt, a commitment to supporting the Palestinian people's cause and Lebanon's right to defend itself, while making every effort to spare Lebanon and the Lebanese from the war that threatens us so that no one holds us responsible for it."
