The head of Iraq's Security Media Cell, Saad Maan, revealed details regarding the attempted assassination of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi. Maan stated that "the attack on the Prime Minister's residence was carried out using three drones." The Iraqi official noted that "the security forces shot down two drones, while the third managed to carry out the attack." A drone laden with explosives targeted Al-Kadhimi's house in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad during the early hours of Sunday, which the Iraqi army described as an "attempted assassination," but affirmed that Al-Kadhimi survived without injury.
The attack, which security sources reported injured several members of Al-Kadhimi's personal guard, occurred after protests in the Iraqi capital over the results of last month's early general elections escalated into violence. The groups leading the protests, which complain about the election results from October, are heavily armed factions backed by Iran, which lost much of its influence within parliament in these elections. These Iranian-backed groups allege that there were violations in the voting and vote counting process. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Al-Kadhimi's residence in the Green Zone so far.
