The Mexican Navy reported on Friday that 14 people died and another was injured due to the crash of a military Black Hawk helicopter in the northwestern state of Sinaloa. The Navy stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, according to Reuters.
The Navy's statement indicated that "the Black Hawk helicopter was involved in an incident whose cause is not yet known," according to AFP. It added, "There were 15 people on board the helicopter. Unfortunately, 14 of them have died, and one person is receiving treatment." The Navy confirmed that the aircraft crashed during a mission.
While Reuters noted that there has been no information suggesting that the incident is related to the arrest of Rafael Caro Quintero, a drug lord, in another part of Sinaloa on Friday, AFP reported that the Mexican Navy confirmed the crash is not connected to the operation during which Caro Quintero was arrested.
