The United Nations World Food Programme has warned that famine will threaten at least 22 million people in the Horn of Africa by September, as the risk of food insecurity increases due to drought reaching record levels. The programme noted that the "absence of rainfall for the fourth consecutive season" since the end of 2020 has exacerbated a drought that is the worst in 40 years, leading to the death of millions of livestock, the destruction of crops, and plunging areas in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia into famine-like conditions. More than one million people have been displaced from their homes in search of water and food.
