The Balad airbase, north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, was targeted in a rocket attack that resulted in two injuries.
The Sumaria News network reported today, Saturday, that a security source confirmed the Balad airbase in Salahaddin province was hit by three Katyusha rockets. The source indicated that the three Katyusha rockets targeted areas surrounding the Balad airbase, noting that they landed in external yards of the base.
The source revealed that the shelling resulted in injuries to two employees working inside the base, one of whom is Iraqi, while the nationality of the second has not yet been identified. Many military areas and foreign diplomatic premises in Baghdad and its outskirts experience recurring rocket attacks from time to time.
A few days ago, the Ministry of Health in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq announced that three people, including a guard at one of the consulates in the Waziri neighborhood in Erbil, were injured due to several rockets falling on the city and its outskirts. The spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasool, announced that the number of rockets that fell in Erbil was 11 and were fired from within the region's borders, specifying that they were launched from two areas in Erbil located more than 5 km from Erbil's center. Rasool explained that the vehicle and the rocket launch site were located, emphasizing that four of the rockets fell within the airport premises in Erbil and others fell on civilians.
Rasool stressed that the Iraqi armed forces would not accept the transformation of the country into a battleground for settling scores, urging the security system in the region to conduct a thorough review of the recent security breach. Last month, four rockets targeted the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport, with one landing on a house in the Hay al-Jihad area near the airport.
