The Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, congratulated his fellow citizen, star athlete Mutaz Essa Barshim, who has gifted his country the second Olympic gold medal in its history during the "Tokyo 2020" Olympic Games. The Amir posted a tweet on his personal account on Twitter stating: "Congratulations to our champion Mutaz Barshim and to Qatar for this victory. Mutaz Essa Barshim won the Olympic gold medal in the high jump competitions on Sunday, after clearing the bar at a height of 2.37 meters on his first attempt, sharing first place with Italian champion Gianmarco Tamberi, who achieved the same height.
With this victory, 30-year-old Mutaz Barshim secured his first Olympic gold medal in his athletic career, following a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics and a silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics in Brazil. Barshim dedicated the third Olympic gold medal to the Arabs and the second to Qatar at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, marking the seventh in the history of Qatar's Olympic participations, including three for the Qatari champion.
Just yesterday, Qatari weightlifter Fares Ibrahim (23 years old) presented his country with its first Olympic gold medal in history, winning in the men's weightlifting 96 kg category at the "Tokyo 2020" Olympics and setting a new Olympic record of 402 kg in total (177 kg in the snatch and 225 kg in the clean and jerk, which is also an Olympic record).
