Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, Liverpool's player and Premier League top scorer, matched a historic record in the Champions League after scoring against Inter Milan on Wednesday evening at the San Siro stadium during the first leg of the Round of 16 of the current season's Champions League (2021-2022). According to the global sports statistics network "Opta," Mohamed Salah became the second player to score against both Milan and Inter in the same Champions League season, following Peter Crouch in the 2010-2011 season.
Liverpool took a significant step towards the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after achieving a valuable 2-0 victory over their hosts, Inter Milan, on Wednesday in the first leg of the Round of 16. Neither team managed to score in the first half, which ended in a goalless draw, but the second half saw goals from substitute Brazilian Roberto Firmino and international star Mohamed Salah in the 75th and 83rd minutes, respectively.
Salah increased his Champions League goal tally for the current season to 8 goals, placing him third in the tournament's scoring chart, just two goals behind Ivorian Sebastien Haller, Ajax Amsterdam’s star, who is the current top scorer. This was the second goal for the Egyptian star in his sixth match against Inter, having previously scored against the team nicknamed "The Snakes" while playing for Fiorentina in the 2014/2015 season.
It was also Salah's second goal this season in the Champions League at the San Siro, where he had previously scored against AC Milan in the group stage of the current tournament. Liverpool can afford to lose by just one goal in the return leg, which will take place at Anfield on March 8, to advance to the quarter-finals of a tournament they have won six times. Conversely, Inter must win by a margin of three goals in the return leg to avoid an early exit from a competition they have won three times.
