A notification issued by the Indian government on Tuesday stated that "the country will not allow the export of cough syrup unless samples are tested in government laboratories," following the deaths of dozens of children in Gambia and Uzbekistan after consuming cough medicines made in India. The notice from the Ministry of Commerce specified: "Export of cough syrup is permitted only after testing the export sample and issuing an analysis certificate."
The government determined that "any cough syrup must obtain an analysis certificate issued by a government laboratory before being exported, effective from June 1."
Cough medicines produced in India have been linked to the deaths of 70 children in Gambia and 19 children in Uzbekistan last year, negatively impacting the $41 billion pharmaceutical industry.
