Egyptian Mohamed Salah, forward for Liverpool, confirmed that he is "totally devastated" by the failure to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League, stating that the club has let down its fans.
Salah indicated via Twitter that he is "completely shattered" and added, "There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool, and qualifying for the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry, but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We have let ourselves down, and we have let the fans down."
Liverpool's hopes were dashed after Manchester United's 4-1 victory over Chelsea on Thursday, leaving the team in fifth place in the league, four points behind the top four with one game remaining.
Last season, Liverpool finished just one point behind Manchester City but failed to meet the challenge this season due to injuries and poor performance. Liverpool will play at Southampton in their final match of the season next Sunday.
