US and Saudi Arabia Announce Ceasefire in Sudan for 7 Days

The Sudanese army agreed today, Sunday, to a new ceasefire agreement that does not include political issues. The United States and Saudi Arabia confirmed in a joint statement that the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, a semi-military group in Sudan, signed a ceasefire agreement late Saturday for a duration of 7 days.

The statement from the U.S. State Department noted that "the ceasefire will take effect starting Monday at 9:45 PM," as fighting enters its sixth week.

Furthermore, the statement added that "unlike previous agreements, the new agreement reached in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, will be supported by a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire under American, Saudi, and international supervision."

The Forces of Freedom and Change called in a statement for "full commitment to the Jeddah Declaration of Principles and the short-term ceasefire agreement and humanitarian arrangements, hoping this agreement will constitute another step forward in the path towards a complete end to this damned war."
