A devastating earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck the city of Kahraman Maraş in southern Turkey early on Monday, resulting in the collapse of several residential buildings in the southern region of the country. Images broadcast by the state-owned TRT channel showed damage to buildings and people gathering in the streets. The Anadolu news agency reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan contacted the governor of Kahraman Maraş to receive updates on the earthquake. Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu stated that Kahraman Maraş, Hatay, and Osmaniye were the most affected cities by the earthquake.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences indicated that a 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook Turkey in the early hours of Monday, noting that it occurred at a depth of ten kilometers. Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake that hit southern Turkey registered 7.9 on the Richter scale.
Local media reported that citizens in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon felt the tremors from the earthquake. Areas in Cairo and several adjacent provinces also experienced seismic activity that residents could feel. Residents in Jordan and Iraq also reported feeling the earthquake.
