A spokesperson for the United States Mission to the United Nations confirmed yesterday, Thursday, that Washington supports the Security Council in taking actions to de-escalate the situation in Niger following the coup announced by military personnel in the country. The spokesperson stated, "The United States is steadfast in its support for democracy in Niger and supports actions in the UN Security Council to de-escalate, prevent harm to civilians, and ensure constitutional order." A US statement noted that US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield spoke with Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum yesterday, Thursday.
