The Pakistani opposition called today, Tuesday, for widespread protests following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The "Tehreek-e-Insaf" party tweeted from its official account, saying, "It's your time, people of Pakistan. Khan has always been by your side, and now it’s time to stand by him."
"Today, the message from leadership to the people is that you must come out for Imran Khan for the first time, just as Khan has been fighting for you for 27 years."
Protests erupted in response to Imran Khan's arrest, with the Pakistani police using tear gas and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators.
Earlier today, the local Pakistani television station "Geo" confirmed that a paramilitary force had arrested Imran Khan while he was appearing in court in Islamabad.
In a statement on its official Twitter account, the Islamabad police announced, "Imran Khan has been arrested in the Qadir Trust case," referring to a corruption case.
"Imran Khan has been arrested in the Qadir Trust case. The IG of Islamabad stated that conditions are normal. Section 144 is in effect, and action will be taken in case of violations."
