The Russian Federal Security Service announced on Monday that it thwarted 18 "terrorist attacks" this year in the Crimea Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. The Interfax news agency reported that the foiled attacks included assassination attempts on Sergey Aksyonov, the Moscow-appointed governor of Crimea, and Oleksiy Tsaryov, a former pro-Russian member of the Ukrainian parliament. The Federal Security Service stated that it arrested 18 agents working for Ukrainian security services and their accomplices on charges of preparing for sabotage operations.
