United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres indicated yesterday, Thursday, that July 2023 is set to overturn previous heat records, after scientists reported it is on track to become the hottest month ever recorded globally. Guterres stated in New York, "We do not have to wait until the end of the month to know this. If a cold period (referred to as a mini ice age) does not occur in the coming days, July 2023 will break the records." He added, "Climate change is here. It is frightening. This is just the beginning," clarifying that "the time for global boiling has come." The World Meteorological Organization and the Copernicus Climate Change Service stated in a joint release that there is a "very high probability" that July 2023 will break the record. Climate scientist at Leipzig University, Karsten Haustein, noted, "The margin of difference between now and July 2019 is so large that we can already confidently say it will be the hottest July." Scientists expect that either 2023 or 2024 will be the hottest year on record, surpassing 2016.
