1900 - Saint Joan of Arc was canonized.

1975 - Japanese climber Junko Tabei became the first woman to summit Everest.

1986 - Members of the military council that led Argentina to defeat in the Falklands War against Britain in 1982 were sentenced to prison terms ranging from eight to 14 years and stripped of their ranks. Former President Leopoldo Galtieri was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

1990 - American artist Sammy Davis Jr. died of throat cancer at the age of 64.

1997 - President Mobutu Sese Seko fled into exile as rebels approached Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

2002 - Belgium became the second country after the Netherlands to decriminalize euthanasia when the House of Representatives passed a bill granting patients the "right to die."

2003 - Suicide bombers carried out at least five explosions in Casablanca, Morocco's largest city. 45 people were killed, including 12 bombers, and around 60 were injured.

2005 - The Democratic Republic of the Congo adopted a new constitution in line with a peace agreement aimed at ending a five-year war.

2005 - The Kuwaiti parliament passed legislation granting women the right to vote and run for election.

2011 - Space Shuttle Endeavour launched from Cape Canaveral on its 25th and final mission.

2014 - Twin explosions occurred at the outdoor Gikambura market in Nairobi.
