Russian General Gennady Zydko, 58, was found dead from a mysterious illness after being removed from military command, according to The Sun. Colonel Zydko had scarcely been seen in recent months since he was replaced by "General Armageddon" Sergei Surovikin as the head of wartime efforts in Ukraine. Pro-Kremlin news outlet Readovka reported that the general died after a "long illness." His death was confirmed by Khabarovsk Governor Mikhail Degarev, also a supporter of the Kremlin. However, no official announcement has been made yet, and no report has mentioned the location of his death. Zydko was effectively appointed to oversee the Ukrainian war effort in April 2022 after the dismissal of General Alexander Dvornikov, known as the "Butcher of Syria." Before his dismissal, he served as Deputy Minister of Defense, oversaw Russian forces in Syria, and held the position of Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. He was also named on a list of Russian officials sanctioned by the UK for their role in the war in Ukraine last February.
