Discovery of 3 Previously Unknown Moons in Our Solar System

Astronomers have discovered three previously unknown moons in our solar system, including two additional moons orbiting Neptune and one orbiting Uranus. The International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center announced the distant small moons today, Friday, using powerful ground-based telescopes in Hawaii and Chile. The latest count confirms that Neptune has 16 known moons, while Uranus has 28 moons, with one of Neptune's new moons having the longest known orbital period so far. The new moon orbiting Uranus, estimated to be only 5 miles (8 kilometers) in diameter, is likely the smallest moon of the planet.
