U.S. Nuclear Submarine Arrives in South Korea

The South Korean Ministry of Defense announced that a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine arrived in South Korea on Sunday, amid concerns that Pyongyang may launch an intercontinental ballistic missile this month. The submarine "USS Missouri (SSN-780)," an attack submarine of the Virginia class, entered a major naval base in Busan, 320 kilometers southeast of Seoul, earlier today, according to the South Korean Navy. The Navy added in a statement: "We plan to enhance maritime exchanges and cooperation with the United States and strengthen our joint defense posture." Earlier this week, Deputy National Security Advisor Kim Tae-hyo raised the possibility of North Korea launching an intercontinental ballistic missile in December as he arrived in Washington to attend the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) meeting, a U.S.-Korea security meeting aimed at discussing nuclear and strategic planning issues.
