Hungary will start purchasing natural gas from Turkey today, Monday, with plans to receive approximately 275 million cubic meters of the fuel in the second and third quarters of 2024. Hungarian energy company "MVM" and Turkish company "BOTAŞ" signed an agreement regarding natural gas supplies in August during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's visit to Budapest. Earlier, the Turkish Foreign Ministry described the beginning of gas supplies as a "historic moment." Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated at the end of March that natural gas would start flowing from Turkey to Hungary in early April 2024, emphasizing that "the historic date is approaching." The intention for Hungary to purchase natural gas from Turkey was first mentioned in the summer of 2023, when Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed that Turkey is a reliable transit country for Russian and Azerbaijani gas supplies.
