The government of Singapore requested that the Israeli embassy remove an "insensitive" post on social media regarding Palestine, warning that it could escalate tensions in the country. Local media reported that the Israeli embassy stated in its post that "Israel is mentioned 43 times in the Quran, while Palestine is not mentioned."
Singapore's Minister of Home Affairs, K. Shanmugam, said he has called on the Singapore Foreign Ministry to request the Israeli embassy remove the post published on Sunday, which the Israeli mission promptly did.
Shanmugam remarked, "This post on the Israeli embassy's social media page is entirely unacceptable... I was very disturbed when I was informed of it." He added, "It is insensitive and inappropriate. It poses a risk of undermining our safety and security, as well as our harmony in Singapore."
While confirming that the post has been removed, Shanmugam emphasized that "posts like this can inflame tensions and could endanger the Jewish community here," adding that "the anger from this post could spill over into the physical realm." This is not the first time that an Israeli diplomatic mission in Asia has sparked a crisis through its social media posts.
