Jordanian King Abdullah II has approved a general amnesty law that involves the release of more than seven thousand prisoners just days before Eid al-Fitr. The official news agency "Petra" revealed on Tuesday evening that the "royal decree" was issued (on the same day) approving the general amnesty law for the year 2024, in the form approved by the Senate and House of Representatives.
The official TV channel "Al-Mamlaka" quoted Public Prosecutor Youssef Al-Dhiabat as saying, "The procedures for the release of those covered by the law will begin starting today, Wednesday, after completing and refining all relevant lists." Al-Dhiabat added, "The process will be very swift."
The channel reported Justice Minister Ahmad Al-Zyadat stating that the general amnesty will include the release of 7,355 inmates in correctional centers, of whom 4,688 are convicted of various misdemeanors, and 2,667 are related to drug offenses. The general amnesty encompasses all criminal, misdemeanor, and violation offenses that occurred prior to March 19, 2024. It excludes 38 crimes, most notably those related to "state security," "terrorism," "human trafficking," "espionage," "rape," "forgery," and "money laundering."
