The Ukrainian Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday that "7 people were killed and 90 others injured due to Russian shelling in the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv." The ministry added that "people were on their way to a church to celebrate a religious occasion when the strike occurred," noting that "among the injured were 12 children." Later, the Ukrainian Interior Minister indicated that "the toll from the Russian shelling in downtown Chernihiv increased to 7 dead and 129 injured."
Earlier that day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned that "casualties were reported following a Russian missile strike on a square in the center of Chernihiv, northern Ukraine." Zelensky stated in a post on the "Telegram" app, "A Russian missile hit downtown... our city Chernihiv." He added, "An ordinary Saturday has been turned by Russia into a day of pain and loss. There are casualties... there are injured."
The United Nations condemned the "heinous" Russian attack that targeted civilians in downtown Chernihiv, resulting in at least seven dead and 110 injured according to local authorities. UN humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, Denise Brown, stated in a statement reported by "Agence France-Presse," "It is atrocious to attack the main square of a large city in the morning while people are strolling and some are heading to church to commemorate a religious occasion."
