Parliament Moves to Address Ports Corruption in Iraq

Member of Parliament Yasser Al-Husseini has called for the formation of an investigative committee regarding violations at Iraq's ports. Al-Husseini stated in a document directed to the presidency of the council, received by Al-Sumaria News, "We kindly ask for your approval to form a committee to investigate the violations at Iraq's ports, composed of members of parliament (Yasser Al-Husseini, Falah Al-Khazali, Hassan Salim, Saud Al-Saadi, Abdul Amir Al-Miyahi, Alaa Al-Haidari, Ali Al-Maksoosi, and Duaa Al-Iqabi), and to prepare their report within 30 days, with staff from the relevant ministries and agencies as needed by the committee."

During a session in the Iraqi parliament, lawmakers revealed a recorded audio that documents the actions of the General Director of Iraqi Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, and his disparagement of members of parliament. Members indicated his "involvement in corruption cases and the squandering of public funds." Al-Husseini expressed his "dismay at Al-Fartousi's actions, which wasted twenty trillion Iraqi dinars," noting that he exceeds constitutional and judicial authorities.

In this context, Acting Speaker Mohsen Al-Mandlawi announced his intention to form a committee to summon Al-Fartousi and question him in the Iraqi parliament according to Article 17 of the State Employees and Public Sector Discipline Law No. 14 of 1991. Deputy Al-Husseini had previously revealed "crimes" committed by General Director Farhan Al-Fartousi, calling on the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Federal Court, the Public Prosecution Service, and the Integrity Commission to issue a court order to suspend the work of the aforementioned director and to open investigations into all files and contracts.
