WFP Calls for Humanitarian Corridors to Bring Food into Gaza

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) called on Sunday for the establishment of humanitarian corridors to facilitate the entry of food into Gaza as Israel continues to carry out airstrikes on the Palestinian territory following deadly attacks by the Hamas movement. The Rome-based WFP stated: "As the conflict escalates, civilians, including children and vulnerable families, are facing increasing challenges in accessing basic food supplies." It added: "The programme calls for the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to the affected areas, and urges all parties to adhere to humanitarian law principles, including ensuring access to food." The programme provides direct food assistance to approximately 350,000 Palestinians monthly, while also offering assistance in collaboration with other humanitarian partners through cash transfers to around one million Palestinians. The programme stated that it is prepared to provide food stocks for the displaced and those in shelters. It noted: "While most stores in the affected areas of Palestine currently have enough food stock for a month, these supplies are at risk of being quickly depleted as people buy food in fear of a prolonged conflict."
