A fire broke out at an oil refinery in Volgograd, southern Russia, following a drone attack launched by Ukraine on Saturday night into Sunday, according to the regional governor Andrei Boucharov. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated on Sunday that air defense systems destroyed 6 attack drones and two ballistic missiles launched by Ukraine during the night targeting Russian territories.
The ministry wrote on Telegram that conventional "Tochka" ballistic missiles were intercepted over Belgorod region. It added that 3 drones were shot down over Bryansk region and 2 over Lipetsk, while one was intercepted over Volgograd.
For his part, Governor Andrei Boucharov stated on Sunday that a drone attack originating from Ukraine during the night briefly ignited a fire at a refining oil facility in the southern Russian region. He reported on the local administration's channel on Telegram that "the fire has been extinguished, and there were no injuries."
The Russian channel "Baza" shared images on Telegram of flames rising into the dark sky above what appeared to be an industrial building with a tall chimney. Earlier on Saturday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Russian air defense systems intercepted 12 "Vampir" rockets launched by Ukraine over Belgorod province.
The Russian Ministry of Defense's statement read: "On May 11, around 19:20 Moscow time, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack on targets within Russia's territory using the multiple launch rocket system 'Vampir' was thwarted." It added, "12 missiles were destroyed over Belgorod province by the deployed air defense systems."
