The White House announced today, Monday, in a statement that U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Lucerne, Switzerland, on June 15 to participate in a peace conference concerning the Ukrainian crisis. Harris will emphasize the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to supporting Ukraine's efforts to ensure a just and lasting peace based on Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky invited U.S. President Joe Biden, who will participate in the G7 summit in Italy, to extend his stay in Europe and attend the summit in Switzerland in person. However, Biden, who is campaigning for re-election, has decided to return to the United States, according to the press, to participate in a fundraising event in California with George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and other Hollywood stars.
Kamala Harris intends to "reaffirm U.S. support for the Ukrainian people." The United States, a key military supporter of Ukraine, will also be represented by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. More than 100 countries and organizations have committed to participating in this summit in Switzerland, as noted by Volodymyr Zelensky, and Russia has not been invited.
