For the First Time: Google and Facebook Pass Their Capacities Through Iraq

The Iraqi Ministry of Communications has revealed that Google and Facebook are passing their capacities through Iraqi territory, marking this as the first time this has happened. It noted that transit projects will provide financial returns for the country.

Ministry spokesperson Omar Al-Amiri told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "the ministry has made significant progress in enhancing Iraq's geographical position regarding transit and facilitating communication traffic and internet capacities through Iraqi territory."

Al-Amiri explained that "the Ministry of Communications signed a new transit contract months ago, not via sea but via land," noting that "this line runs from the south to the center, reaching the Kurdistan region, then exiting to Turkey and connecting Asia to Europe through Iraq."

He added that "the Ministry of Communications has fulfilled its promises regarding transit and utilizing Iraq's location," emphasizing that "Iraq's geographical position and its exploitation in international communications, along with its prominent return to the International Telecommunication Union, will provide financial returns, in addition to many global companies passing their capacities through Iraqi territory."

He referred to the "Civilizations Route transit agreement that was signed months ago," confirming that "Google and Facebook have passed their capacities through Iraqi territory for the first time."

It is worth mentioning that Iraqi Communications Minister Hiam Al-Yasiri announced on Friday that international communication traffic through Iraq has exceeded the "one terabyte" threshold, confirming that Iraq possesses a secure, attractive, and reliable route for transit communications.
