UK Prime Minister to Iranian President: War is Not in Anyone's Interest

The office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the Prime Minister held a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian, urging him not to attack Israel, emphasizing that war is not in anyone's interest. Starmer expressed deep concern over the situation in the Middle East and called on all parties to de-escalate and avoid further confrontations in the region.

The Prime Minister's office quoted Starmer saying, "There is a significant risk of miscalculation, and now is the time for calm and careful thought." He also reiterated his commitment to an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Starmer emphasized that the focus should be on diplomatic negotiations. He and Bezhakian agreed that constructive dialogue between their countries serves their mutual interests. However, Starmer informed Bezhakian that such dialogue could only be strengthened if Iran ceased its "destabilizing actions," including threatening individuals in Britain and not assisting Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.

Starmer's call with Bezhakian was part of efforts to halt escalation and reduce tension in the Middle East. Iran has vowed to retaliate against Israel following the recent killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Lebanese Hezbollah military commander Fouad Shukr in Beirut days ago.
