EU Greenlights Ukraine and Moldova Membership Talks

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that all EU member states have agreed to launch the first round of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. This marks a significant development in the EU's expansion efforts in recent years.

Von der Leyen confirmed that formal negotiations are set to begin on June 15, following complete consensus among member states on opening initial negotiating chapters with both countries.

Writing on platform 'X', the European Commission President stated that the EU has taken an important step forward, highlighting that all member states have agreed to commence the first set of accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova.

She clarified that the first round will be inaugurated during the upcoming intergovernmental conference scheduled for June 15, focusing on the “basics” group, which covers fundamental EU principles including the rule of law, institutional independence, democratic governance, and protection of fundamental rights.

This decision is seen as a pivotal phase in the EU's rapprochement with Ukraine and Moldova, both of which have previously been granted candidate status for EU membership.

Accession to the EU requires a lengthy process of negotiations and political, economic, and legal reforms to ensure candidate countries align with EU standards.

Observers note that the initiation of formal negotiations reflects growing European support for both Kyiv and Chișinău, affirming Brussels' commitment to pursuing expansion and strengthening partnerships with European neighbors.

Despite the importance of this step, the path to full membership remains lengthy, as Ukraine and Moldova must implement extensive reforms and complete membership prerequisites before reaching the final stages of negotiations.
