The German Health Center stated that itching is an annoying health concern, noting that its potential causes are numerous, mainly skin diseases such as neurodermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections, and allergies to pollen or metals like nickel. The center added that it may also indicate liver diseases, especially if the skin changes color to yellow, or kidney failure, diabetes, or pathological hormonal disorders such as hyperthyroidism.
Itching can also result from neurological diseases such as polyneuropathy and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, it may be a side effect of medications such as antibiotics, psychotropic drugs, hypertension medications, and anticoagulants. In the worst cases, it may signal the presence of cancer, such as lymphoma, breast cancer, or lung cancer.
It is important to consult a doctor to determine the cause of itching and receive appropriate treatment, especially if it persists for a long time accompanied by symptoms such as fever, rash, or changes in skin color.
