Lebanon has been officially active for several months on multiple levels to facilitate the return of Syrian displaced persons to their homeland, a process that has stagnated for about three years due to the measures imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and Lebanon’s focus on its crises and the aftermath of the Beirut port explosion. An official Lebanese source told "Asharq Al-Awsat" that "Lebanon has activated efforts on five fronts to advance the return issue, including security, diplomacy, and coordination with Damascus, as well as addressing plans to integrate displaced persons into Lebanese society." The source mentioned a "disagreement with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees regarding the approach to the issue and ongoing efforts to address problems with them, especially since they have not provided the relevant official authorities with the data they hold concerning the displaced." Additionally, the source noted that the Commission "remains unresponsive regarding the return issue."
