TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, became the most popular website in the world in 2021, surpassing Google, according to the latest available data. Cloudflare, a web security company, stated in a blog post that TikTok reached the top spot for the first time on February 17, but only for one day. The short video app also ranked first in March and May, and it held the top position from August 10 for several days. Cloudflare noted that there were some days when Google was in first place, but TikTok dominated during October and November, including on Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26).
In 2020, the social video app TikTok was ranked seventh among the most popular domains, showing a significant jump in popularity compared to the previous year. The other top 10 popular domains included Facebook (owned by Meta), followed by Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, YouTube, Twitter, and finally WhatsApp. TikTok was also the most popular social media platform this year, surpassing Facebook. YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram were among the top five, followed by Snapchat, Reddit, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Quora.
Cloudflare's data also indicated that Netflix and YouTube were the top two streaming sites in 2021, but HBO Max surpassed Hulu—of which Disney is the largest owner—ranking fourth, while Paramount came in eighth, following their launches in March 2021.
