The Yemeni government announced today, Thursday, the opening and operation of Mokha International Airport for flights starting Friday, April 5th, following two years of construction with Emirati support. The Yemeni Ministry of Transport stated in a statement that "under the directives and follow-up of Minister of Transport Abdul Salam Humeid and General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology Chairman Captain Saleh bin Naheid, the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology issued a circular regarding the readiness of Mokha Airport in Taiz Governorate and announced its operation, opening for flights starting April 5, 2024."
The airport will welcome and operate flights, functioning as a Class G airport, from dawn until dusk as a first phase, beginning at 00:01 on April 5, 2024. The statement called upon all airlines and international organizations operating flights in the Republic of Yemen to be aware of the airport's technical and administrative readiness, with the international airport code approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization being (OYMK).
This announcement comes after all preparations for the airport were completed, marking one of the most significant achievements witnessed in Yemen during wartime, under the patronage of the Vice President of the Presidential Leadership Council, National Resistance Leader Tariq Saleh, with generous funding from the United Arab Emirates.
The UAE built Mokha International Airport from scratch in three phases, with the first phase involving paving 2,200 meters, the second phase covering 800 meters, resulting in a runway and tower area of 3,100 meters. According to Yemeni officials speaking to "Ain News," Mokha Airport can accommodate large and medium-sized Nation aircraft, and it was constructed to global standards according to the Global Reval Organization, with the reception area accommodating 350 passengers.
