Liverpool Seeks to Sign the Most Expensive Player in Its History

Liverpool is aiming to sign Uruguayan Darwin Núñez, a striker from Portuguese club Benfica, to strengthen its attacking line in anticipation of Senegalese Sadio Mané's expected move to Bayern Munich during the current summer transfer window. According to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who specializes in transfer news, Benfica has already received an official offer from Liverpool to acquire the 22-year-old Núñez.

Liverpool has made an offer worth 80 million euros, with ongoing discussions regarding an additional amount ranging between 15 and 20 million euros, related to add-ons and incentives. Liverpool is also negotiating the payment method for this substantial amount, preferring to pay it in installments over 5 years.

Should Núñez transfer to Liverpool for this amount, which could reach 100 million euros including add-ons and incentives, he would become the most expensive player in the history of the English club. In this case, Núñez would break the transfer record set by Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, who moved from Southampton to Liverpool in January 2018 for 84.5 million euros.

**Darwin Núñez Profile:**

Darwin Núñez plays as a center-forward ("striker"), but he is also deployed as a winger or playmaker. Núñez grew up in the youth academy of Peñarol, one of the largest clubs in Uruguay, and progressed through the ranks until reaching the first team in 2018. The young Uruguayan striker moved to Europe the following year, joining Almería in Spain, which paid 13 million euros for him.

Núñez excelled impressively at Almería, scoring 16 goals and providing 3 assists in 32 matches, catching the attention of several European clubs. In the summer of 2020, Núñez transferred to Benfica for 24 million euros, signing a contract that lasts until 2025, and has since participated in 84 matches, scoring 74 goals and providing 16 assists.

On the international level, Núñez began his career with the Uruguayan national team in 2019 and has since played 11 matches, scoring 2 goals.
