Despite nearing his 27th year in professional competitions, veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon does not intend to retire. He has signed a new contract with Parma, which will see him continue on the pitch until the age of 46. Last year, Buffon returned to Parma, a team in the second division, where he played his first match at the age of 17 in November 1995. The club announced on Monday that the goalkeeper has extended his contract until 2024.
Buffon stated in a press conference: "It's a beautiful day for me and my entire family. What I wanted has truly come to pass, and I believe the president and the club wanted it as well. I hope this is the same feeling for the fans and city officials." The Italian goalkeeping legend added: "My return to Parma was tied to the good relationship and love I have for the club, its fans, and the city."
Buffon, who has won ten Serie A titles and holds the record for the most appearances in the competition with 657 matches, announced the contract extension during a press conference with club president Kyle Kraus. Kraus added: "He is a great goalkeeper that we all take pride in having with us. In addition to his leadership qualities, Buffon possesses remarkable skills. We feel his love for Parma every day, and we are overjoyed to extend his presence with us."
