Mexican driver Sergio Perez of Red Bull claimed pole position at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in the Formula 1 World Championship, taking advantage of a problem faced by his teammate, reigning champion Max Verstappen, on Sunday. Perez achieved the top spot, outperforming Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, who will drop ten places at the start due to a penalty. Fernando Alonso came in third with Aston Martin but will start from the front row. Verstappen exited the second qualifying session due to what appeared to be an engine issue, but Red Bull later announced it was a break in the drive shaft.
