The World Health Organization has stated that the COVID-19 pandemic may stabilize this year to the extent that it will pose a threat similar to that of influenza. The organization expressed confidence that it would be able to declare an end to the emergency situation at some point during 2023, stating that it is "increasingly looking forward to the epidemic phase of the virus nearing its end." Last weekend marked three years since the WHO described the situation as a "pandemic," although its director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, insists that countries should have taken precautions several weeks earlier.
