Burkina Faso authorities confirmed on Saturday that "two attacks occurred in the northern part of the country, resulting in the deaths of 44 civilians on Thursday evening." The attacks took place in the villages of Kourako and Toundobi in the Sahel region of the West African country. The perpetrators of the Thursday attacks have not yet been identified, but authorities held "armed terrorist groups" responsible on Saturday. The unrest has led to two military coups last year, with the army pledging to reclaim control over the country but failing to stop the bloodshed.
