Axios: The U.S. Ambassador to Israel Will Depart This Summer

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department announced on Tuesday that U.S. Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides will leave his position this summer, without specifying the reason. His deputy, Stephanie Halit, will assume responsibility until a new ambassador is appointed. The spokesperson stated, "Tom Nides has actively and passionately worked to further enhance the unique bond between the United States and Israel and advance the diplomatic, economic, and security interests of the United States." Axios reported that U.S. officials said that Nides informed senior staff at the U.S. Embassy in Israel earlier on Tuesday that he wishes to return to the United States for personal reasons. Nides has been a key link between the Biden administration and Israel, the U.S.'s largest ally in the Middle East, amid political turmoil in Israel and rising violence in the occupied West Bank.
